Thank you!
Peg Achterman
02:02:19
for those of you who have Zoom through your university - you can also record to Zoom locally and it will spit out a file (mp4) that can be edited on any software as well. QT is great - but makes huge files. Just to know it can be done on Zoom as well.
Julia Largent
02:02:54
This works on free accounts, too!
Vic Costello
02:03:43
Yes, good suggestion. Especially for bringing in multiple people.
Jason Guthrie
02:05:27
On the latest version of Mac OS the screen grab program is now call “Screenshot.” I record with that and then compress the video with Handbrake
James Lohrey
02:05:35
Quicktime recording is super easy
Kim Fox
02:09:52
Peg: On the backend, Zoom has a lot of preference options. I don’t use a lot of video other than the basic recording, but let me know if you’d like for me to show you the backend.
Julia Largent
02:09:56
I’ve experienced very similar things!
Jason Guthrie
02:10:15
Also, if it helps anyone I have curated the Adobe made tutorials for all the major softwares into link lists and clickable PDFs at www.adobe.pro
Jason Guthrie
02:10:32
Thats a free resource for anyone to use however you wish
Kim Fox
02:10:37
That’s great. Thx Jason.
Peg Achterman
02:12:24
Kim - oh yeah - I've used many Zoom features - it's worked well for me.
Bradley Weaver
02:13:30
AWESOME TIP!!! The mic mishap will mess you up!
Peg Achterman
02:13:50
Jason I'd love to see your Adobe list - I find those to be great but sometimes there are so so many of them. I like to balance between my own tutorials and the ones from others.
Michael Bruce
02:15:37
We have a site license for SnagIt! You can record screen, including internal audio (from audio files or internet site) as well as microphone at the same time, and easily switch between screen and camera recording.
Jason Guthrie
02:15:45
Theres more on the website but these are the most popular
Kevin Mullin
02:16:41
Thanks, that’s awesome Jason!
Jason Guthrie
02:17:01
And yes Peg I agree, the Adobe tutorial site is not curated well. The PDFs are ordered from Beginner to Intermediate. The ones in the top section are the ones that have downloadable assets to work along with (which are the most helpful)
Peg Achterman
02:19:30
Jason perfect - thanks.
Dr. Gary Gould
02:20:08
Very helpful!
Peg Achterman
02:21:13
As to Brandon's comment on when students watch vids - I know Katy Culver at Wisco does a deal where they have to watch before their lab and then they have to DO the thing in lab -- good way to know if they watched and got the gist of how things worked.
Peg Achterman
02:27:18
Camtasia used to be really expensive - is it still?
Kim Fox
02:27:45
I’m curious to know the pricing too. Thx in adv.
Peg Achterman
02:28:05
Another one I found to be helpful for screen capture is called Loom (plug-in for Chrome/FF).
Diane Guerrazzi
02:28:06
Ask your university to get a license for all faculty to use. We have one. It’s great.
Vic Costello
02:28:39
$160 educational I think
James Lohrey
02:29:11
Is there a link to get free clips for educational purposes?
Kim Fox
02:29:13
Loom is great.
Vic Costello
02:29:33
https://www.techsmith.com/camtasia-pricing.html $169
Dr. Gary Gould
02:29:36
Camtasia also does auto closed captioning
James Schiffman
02:29:44
Agree. Zoom works well.
Ed Youngblood
02:29:53
Captioning is huge.
Ed Youngblood
02:30:44
You can also run a video through YouTube, let it auto-caption and then edit the captions and down the SRT. I’ve heard (but not tried) loading a transcript and having YouTube auto-sync.
James Schiffman
02:31:21
Sorry I meant Loom!
Dr. Gary Gould
02:31:38
Yes, the auto captioning in Camtasia is not as good as the auto captions on YouTube but you can edit the captions fairly easily and Camtasia captions seems to get more accurate the more I use it.
Peg Achterman
02:32:00
Panopto (if your school has that) will close caption as well.
Kathy Hughes
02:32:37
We host our videos (recorded in Zoom) on VidGrid, which provides captioning. The video on VidGrid is then linked to a page in Canvas. It’s a bit of a process, but it has become a routine at this point.
Peg Achterman
02:36:01
I think the balance of Lynda, Adobe, etc and our own is key. They want to know you!!!

Kim Fox

Ha, I bought my ring light in Cairo, but Amazon has many options. I’ll see if I have any bookmarked there.

Camtasia allows capture of camera and screen, but you can use the edit to decide what to show after the recording. It is powerful than QT alone.
Kim Fox
02:42:33
There’s also an option in Zoom to provide a transcript. It still needs cleanup, but it gets the job done.
Julia Largent
02:43:57
what was the name of the zoom app?
Kim Fox
02:44:06
FYI: My colleagues have complained that Panopto vids are pretty heavy.
Peg Achterman
02:44:44
yes they are - and quality isn't great.

Handbrake is a pretty spiffy encoder and is cross-platform and free
Van Dora Williams
02:46:05
Vic can you show the accessibility function in Mac OS again?
Peg Achterman
02:46:16
if you don't have Adobe CC -- or just need to advise a student. There is a great converter called Zamzar.
Dr. Gary Gould
02:49:32
Adobe's subscription model is terrible vs. buying the program outright
